Spirulina by SWAN LIFE
Spirulina Arthrospira Platensis
Spirulina Arthrospira Platensis, or Spirulina for short, is a type of blue-green alga. This cyanobacteria is free floating and is commonly found in tropic and subtropic lakes with high pH levels and temperatures around 86°F. Historically, Spirulina was used as a rich food source by the Mesoamericans and the Aztec people from the Texcoco lake. It was formed into a “cake” and sold or traded.
From a nutrient standpoint, Spirulina is incredibly rich and is an adequate food source. Dried Spirulina breaks down to be composed of 24% carbohydrates needed for energy, 8% fat needed for organ protection and 68% protein needed for cell growth and repair. This composition makes Spirulina a relatively low-fat, low-carb and high-protein supplement.
The consumption of Spirulina Arthrospira Platensis has many possible benefits:
Oxidation caused by free radicals in the body can cause chronic illness and damage to your cells and DNA. Thankfully, Spirulina is a powerful antioxidant and can reduce inflammation in the body. The phycocyanin compound is the main antioxidant in Spirulina and is also responsible for the blue-green color of the algae. Spirulina may reduce bad cholesterol levels while also increasing good cholesterol levels which promotes heart health.
Spirulina is thought to lower blood pressure which is a large contributor to heart disease. The nitric oxide found in the algae is believed to be the key for reducing blood pressure. Lowered blood pressure reduces the chance of kidney disease, heart attacks and stroke so it is important to take high blood pressure seriously. Allergies are caused by irritants causing inflammation in the nasal passage. Because of its antiinflammatory properties, Spirulina is thought to be a great aid in reducing allergy symptoms such as itching and congestion.
